Sonia B. ‘28 has always felt a strong connection to the community. She recalled on one of her first days at Poly, a girl she had just met took her on a tour around the school. Since then, her ties to friends and school have only increased. Sonia has also grown to love literature and writing both in and out of the classroom and has found all her English teachers to be interesting. This semester she has Mr. Chuck Nwoke for English and noted that he “leads very engaging class conversations.”
Sonia is a contributing writer and pens opinions for The Polygon, Poly’s student newspaper, which is open to both Upper and Middle schoolers. She sees it as an outlet for her love of English and as a way of contributing to the Poly community. One of her favorite articles she’s written for The Polygon was a critique about the backlash women in the music industry, like Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo, receive for writing about breakups. She loves how the student-run newspaper gives her a chance to express her opinions. “I want my voice to be heard.” She also said Ms. Racheal Allen, the faculty advisor for The Polygon, is very encouraging of young writers. “She’s always posting new journalism opportunities.” Sonia said it feels “great” knowing there is someone like Ms. Allen who wants her to succeed.
Beyond English and writing for The Polygon, Sonia says she loves the campus and is still surprised at how big it is. “I really love it here,” she said. “Go Poly!”
